A Rear View Seat

A few weeks ago I had rear view seats to see Bon Jovi in concert.  This meant I was sitting behind the stage which was great because I got to see the concert from the band’s perspective.  Once the house lights came on, you could really get the feeling of how many people were in the attendance.

The concert started out great for the first two songs, until the lights came up and this was my view.  It’s such a lovely light isn’t it?  I named the light Bob.

So after a couple of songs, I was like “ok, not the best situation but I can deal with it”.  Then the screens came up and this is what I saw for most of the show.

After a quick trip to Guest Services, we received new seats in front of the stage.  The lights and screen did look pretty cool from the front but didn’t really do anything for the people in a rear view seat.

Take Three Steps to the Left

This past weekend I spent time hanging out in the woods and playing paparazzi to participants of a local Adventure Race. An Adventure Race is a mental and physical event of orientating, canoeing, rock walk climbing, a paintball course, and mountain biking along with some puzzles to add a little bit of fun. I like to think of it as a Warrior Race on steroids. My job for six hours was to capture moments of the race without getting in the way of the participants, or getting shot by any paintballs in the process. When taking photographs at an event I typically want space around the subject to see the environment of the event. Look beyond the subject to make sure your photo does not get photo bombed by the ugly trash can, another tourist or in the example below parked cars. As the sniper volunteers were shooting off extra bullets at the end of the race, I grabbed my camera to snap a few pictures. By asking the volunteers to step three steps to the left, I eliminated the parked cars in the background while adding a rustic background and extra paintball guns in the foreground. It is amazing how three steps in one direction can change the entire look of a picture. The next time you go to take a snapshot, do a quick check of the background and foreground of your subject to keep distracting or unappealing things in check before you click.
